What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are organic compounds, they are highly volatile meaning they have very small, light molecules with a fast evaporation rate. They are carefully obtained through processes such as steam distillation or cold pressing plant parts. The essential oils can be derived from different parts of a plant such as the petals of roses, or the roots, leaves, bark or resin. An oil’s chemical constituents dictate its aroma, taste, and therapeutic properties, a single oil can have many different uses. Each oil possesses a range of different actions e.g. anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, stimulant etc.

How do Essential Oils Work on the Body?

  • Essential oils when exposed to air, are highly volatile meaning they have very small, light molecules with a fast evaporation rate.
  • So, when the bottle is opened and offered to your animal, the unique fragrance of that particular oil is then inhaled 👃.
  • The tiny essential oils molecules travel straight into the nose and easily pass through the lining into the blood and brain.
  • Then entering into the limbic system 🧠, the part of the brain that processes emotions, memories and survival instincts. The essential oils trigger responses such as, anti-inflammatory, calming, antiviral, stimulating effects, relaxing the nervous system.
  • The essential oils act like messengers bringing in new information and can work on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels of the body.

Why We Offer Them as a Choice…

Animals have the innate ability to self-medicate, a process known as Zoopharmacognosy. When given the opportunity, they can intuitively select the aromatic botanicals—such as essential oils—they need to maintain their health and support their own healing. Allowing animals this choice significantly reduces stress, a major contributor to dis-ease and many common illnesses we see in domestic settings. Instead of always being told what to do or when to eat, we can give them a sense of control over their own wellbeing by offering these aromatics. When we offer a carefully diluted oil, they can communicate a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and we can simply listen and be guided by them. This direct communication between animal and guardian deepens the connection you share, as this creates a space where your animal feels truly heard and understood. They can also receive the therapeutic effects of the individual essential oils, that nurture both physical and emotional health.

💛 I always recommend working with a trained professional, like myself, to ensure natural remedies are used safely and effectively. These remedies should always be offered under self-selection principles, meaning the animals guide the process and nothing is ever forced upon them.
